Tensilica HiFi Audio DSP adds Dolby® Volume technology

21ic Tensilica has announced that it will add Dolby® Volume technology to its popular HiFi audio DSP (digital signal processor). The technology is based on Dolby's software source code development and has passed Dolby certification. Dolby Volume technology is used in SoC (system on a chip) design for home entertainment systems, digital TV and mobile digital TV. The goal is to provide the same playback volume for any content source.

The technologies behind Dolby Volume, such as loudness domain signal processing and auditory scene analysis, use advanced psychoacoustic, auditory science human auditory models. This allows Dolby technology to recognize differences in sound sources to eliminate unwanted artifacts such as breath sounds from pre-compression and expansion techniques.

Dolby Volume also dynamically balances the low, medium, and high frequency sounds of each channel to compensate for the effects of ear sensitivity on different frequency sounds when adjusting volume. Therefore, the nuances and effects of the original mix are maintained at a low volume.

Tensilica HiFi Audio DSPs provide a hardware platform for chip designers and system OEMs to efficiently run most audio standards as well as proprietary audio processing algorithms. Tensilica's customers and their partners have ported more than 80 audio algorithm libraries in different audio formats to the HiFi architecture, so designers can choose the application software they need. As the market evolves and new standards are defined, they can be easily and quickly embedded into the HiFi architecture to design future-proof chips.
