Researchers worldwide are working on ways to detect Alzheimer's disease at its earliest stages. Early diagnosis is crucial, as it allows patients to begin appropriate treatments that can slow the progression of the disease and gives them time to manage legal and financial affairs. While some scientists focus on blood tests or cerebrospinal fluid analysis, others are developing innovative devices to identify early signs. However, a team from the University of Bari in Italy believes that artificial intelligence holds the key to early detection. They have created an algorithm capable of identifying subtle brain changes linked to Alzheimer’s up to 10 years before symptoms appear.
This AI system was trained using 67 MRI scans—38 from individuals with Alzheimer’s and 29 from healthy volunteers. The researchers divided the images into smaller regions and taught the AI to analyze neural connections. After training, they tested the algorithm on 148 participants, including 48 people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and 48 with mild cognitive impairment, who later progressed to the full disease.
The AI demonstrated an 86% accuracy rate in diagnosing Alzheimer’s and an 84% success rate in detecting mild cognitive impairment, making it a promising tool for early detection. Although the study used data from a single database at the University of Southern California, the researchers believe that with more data and continued development, the technology could become even more reliable. In the future, this AI system might serve as a non-invasive method for early Alzheimer’s screening, offering hope for earlier intervention and better patient outcomes.
