TD-SCDMA mobile TV terminal solution introduction

With the arrival of the three major international 3G standards—TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, and CDMA2000—in China, a comprehensive industrial ecosystem centered around operators has taken shape. After several years of development, the structure of China’s 3G communication industry has become well-established. Concurrently, the mobile TV industry based on CMMB (China Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting) has also experienced rapid growth. The expansion of network infrastructure and the maturation of the supply chain have positioned CMMB as the world's largest mobile TV network, with a solid industrial foundation in place. In March 2010, China Mobile announced the launch of a commercial service that integrates TD-SCDMA and CMMB, laying a strong groundwork for the maximization of independent intellectual property development. To support the industrialization of China's self-developed technologies, Spreadtrum Communications Co., Ltd. (referred to as "Spreadtrum") has been fully dedicated to researching and developing related products and solutions, aiming to accelerate the growth of China's telecommunications and broadcast television industries. The Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA) system is an independent 3G mobile communication standard developed by China and recognized as an international standard by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). In 2004, Spreadtrum launched the first commercial TD-SCDMA/GSM/GPRS multimode baseband chip, the SC8800 series, marking a significant milestone in the industry. China Mobile Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (CMMB) is another independent mobile multimedia broadcasting standard, established by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television. In May 2008, Spreadtrum introduced the first CMMB mobile TV single-chip solution, the SC6600V. Additionally, at the 3GSM World Congress in 2009, Spreadtrum released the world’s first RF chip supporting TD-SCDMA/GSM/GPRS/HSDPA. The 3G mobile TV solution, built around the SC8800 TD-SCDMA baseband chip, the SC6600V CMMB multimedia chip, and the QS3200 multimode RF chip, offers full-featured, low-cost, and turnkey solutions while supporting China’s independent intellectual property standards. The SC8800 is a highly integrated, full-featured, and low-power communication multimedia TD-SCDMA mobile baseband chip. Currently, most 3G phone solutions supporting TD-SCDMA use 5–6 core chips, which often result in issues such as low integration, high power consumption, and large product size—challenges that complicate production for device manufacturers. Traditionally, TD-SCDMA communication modules require separate baseband and RF chips for TD-SCDMA, along with additional chips for GSM/GPRS functionality. Similarly, multimedia processing modules may need dedicated coprocessors for tasks like MP3/MP4 playback. The SC8800, however, is the industry’s first highly integrated chip that combines TD-SCDMA baseband processing, GSM/GPRS baseband processing, and multimedia functions into one, offering a complete 3G handset solution. It supports HSDPA/TD-SCDMA/GSM/GPRS/EDGE multi-mode baseband processing and enables high-speed data downloads via HSDPA. As shown in Figure 1, the functional architecture of the SC8800 includes a multimode baseband processing unit, a multimedia processing unit, a power management unit, and a rich set of peripheral interfaces. Each module is designed with modularity in mind, ensuring excellent reliability and flexibility. Key features of the SC8800 include: **Multimode Communication Baseband Processing**: The SC8800 supports HSDPA/TD-SCDMA/GSM/GPRS/EDGE standards, including quad-band GSM850/EGSM900/DCS1800/PCS1900 and EGPRS Class12. It supports the TD-SCDMA standard (3GPP Release 5) across three frequency bands: F-band (1880–1900 MHz), A-band (2010–2025 MHz), and E-band (2320–2370 MHz). This ensures full compliance with China Mobile’s 2G and 3G convergence specifications. **Powerful Multimedia Capabilities**: The SC8800 features a built-in video processor for encoding and decoding, along with enhanced multimedia hardware accelerators for improved image processing. It supports MPEG4 playback at 25fps and multiple audio codecs, such as MP3, AAC, and AAC+. It also handles polyphonic ringtones and provides stereo output. Additionally, it includes a 2-megapixel digital camera controller that can directly interface with a CMOS image sensor for camera functions. **Comprehensive LCD Support**: The chip supports WQVGA resolution (400x240) for various screen sizes, including 2.0-inch, 2.4-inch, 2.8-inch, 3.0-inch, and 3.2-inch displays. It also supports dual-color screens and integrates both LCD and touch screen controllers, allowing for greater design flexibility. **Cost-Effective Memory Support**: The SC8800 includes a NAND flash controller and SDRAM/DDR controller, supporting NAND booting and mainstream NAND+SDRAM MCP configurations. The voltage settings for NAND flash are flexible, configurable to 1.8V, 2.65V, 2.8V, or 3.0V via strap settings. Power is efficiently managed, with NAND flash powered at 2.65V and SDRAM at 1.8V. Users can select cost-effective memory options such as 1Gb/512Mb or 512Mb/256Mb MCP configurations based on market demands.
