In a recent interview, Liang Tao, a researcher from the Power Department, stated that two ultra-high voltage (UHV) power transmission channels in Tianjin will save 9 million tons of coal annually and reduce carbon emissions by 17.5 million tons, as well as cut sulfur dioxide emissions by 44,000 tons and nitrogen oxides by 46,000 tons. These UHV lines—Ximeng-Shandong and Mengxi-Tianjin South—are key to transforming Tianjin into a crucial hub for power transmission in North China.
Once these projects are fully operational, Tianjin Power Grid will serve as a central point for the west-to-east and north-to-south power transfer, marking the city’s official entry into the "Ultra High Voltage era." This shift not only strengthens the grid's reliability but also supports broader energy efficiency goals.
China has completed the “Four Matches and Four Straights†UHV project, which includes four AC lines such as Huainan-Nanjing-Shanghai, Ximeng-Shandong, Mengxi-Tianjin South, Yiheng-Weifang, and Ningdong-Zhejiang, along with four DC lines like Jinbei-Jiangsu and Ximeng-Taizhou. These projects have significantly contributed to clean energy distribution, with a total investment of 220 billion yuan, spanning 16 provinces and covering 16,000 km of high-voltage lines.
The impact of these projects is evident in improved air quality. Since winter began, haze levels have dropped noticeably. In November 2017, the Ministry of Environmental Protection reported that 338 cities saw an average of 79.2% good air days, up 6.3 percentage points year-on-year. PM2.5 concentrations fell by 10.5%, and PM10 levels dropped by 2.7%. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region saw even greater improvements, with PM2.5 levels decreasing by 41.2%.
These results align with the 2013 State Council’s Air Pollution Prevention Action Plan, which aimed to reduce pollution by expanding clean energy use and reducing coal dependency. By 2014, 12 key transmission lines were included in the plan, connecting energy-rich western regions to eastern demand centers, helping to cut coal use and lower PM2.5 levels by 4%-5%.
According to data from the State Grid Corporation, after all 10 UHV projects are completed, they will add 80 million kilowatts of power capacity in the east and central regions, reduce annual coal transportation by 180 million tons, and help meet electricity needs while supporting emission reduction targets.
Liang Tao emphasized that these "green power" transmissions not only cut costs but also minimize dust pollution from coal transport and storage. The UHV projects are reshaping China’s energy landscape, enabling efficient long-distance power delivery and supporting sustainable development.
By boosting wind and solar power utilization, especially in Inner Mongolia, the UHV network helps transform regional resource advantages into economic benefits. For example, the Mengxi-Tianjin South line has increased outbound power capacity in Inner Mongolia by nearly 2.7 times, improving energy efficiency and reducing local coal dependence.
Moreover, the UHV grid has helped prevent energy shortages in Tianjin, especially during gas supply crises. With the ability to replace gas and coal with electricity, it ensures stable power supply and supports future coal-to-electricity reforms. As Tianjin continues to grow, the UHV system plays a critical role in maintaining energy security and environmental sustainability.
