In a recent interview, Liang Tao, a researcher from the Power Department, shared insights with the First Finance Bureau about the impact of two Ultra High Voltage (UHV) power transmission channels in Tianjin. According to the Tianjin Industry and Information Technology Commission, these channels are expected to save 9 million tons of coal annually, reduce carbon emissions by 17.5 million tons, sulfur dioxide by 44,000 tons, and nitrogen oxides by 46,000 tons. The UHV projects—Ximeng-Shandong and Mengxi-Tianjin South—have transformed Tianjin into a critical hub for power transmission in North China, shifting it from a regional power station to a key channel for energy transfer.
With the completion of the "Four AC and Four DC" UHV projects, including major lines like Huainan-Nanjing-Shanghai, Ximeng-Shandong, Mengxi-Tianjin South, Yiheng-Weifang, Ningdong-Zhejiang, Jinbei-Jiangsu, Ximeng-Taizhou, and Shanghai Temple-Shandong, China has significantly expanded its clean energy distribution network. These projects have created over 16,000 kilometers of UHV lines, with a total investment of 220 billion yuan, spanning 16 provinces and autonomous regions. They have added 174 million kVA of substation capacity, enhancing the efficiency of power delivery across the country.
The positive effects of these projects are evident in environmental improvements. Since winter began, smog levels have dropped noticeably. Data from the Ministry of Environmental Protection in November 2017 showed that the average number of good air quality days in 338 cities increased by 6.3 percentage points year-on-year, while PM2.5 concentrations fell by 10.5%. In the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the improvement was even more pronounced, with a 31.6 percentage point increase in excellent days and a 41.2% reduction in PM2.5 levels.
The State Council's 2013 "Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Atmospheric Pollution" aimed to reduce pollution through energy restructuring, promoting the use of external power transmission to decrease coal consumption. This plan included 12 key UHV transmission corridors, such as the "Six Cross and Four Straight" project, which connect energy-rich western areas with densely populated eastern regions. These projects help reduce coal use by 200 million tons annually and lower PM2.5 concentrations by 4-5%.
According to data from the State Grid Corporation of China, once all 10 UHV projects are fully operational, they will add 80 million kilowatts of power capacity in the east and central regions, cut annual coal transport by 180 million tons, and effectively meet electricity demands in key economic zones. This not only supports energy-saving goals but also enhances air quality and reduces pollution.
Liang Tao emphasized that these green power channels also cut transportation costs and minimize dust pollution associated with coal movement. As the UHV grid expands, it helps balance energy supply and demand, supporting sustainable development and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. With ongoing upgrades, the UHV system is set to play a vital role in future energy strategies, ensuring stability and environmental protection.
