Introduction:
For quite some time now, I’ve been eyeing the Shure SE846. After enjoying the sound of the W60 and K3003, I felt it was time to take the next step and give SE846 a try. So, I began searching for a local distributor. The price tag is steep, around 6888 yuan on JD.com, which made me curious about its performance.
The package came intact, and the photos provided were minimal. I’ll spare you the pictures, but the transparency of the unit is quite striking. The accessories were surprisingly comprehensive. Notable items include different types of ear tips and earmuffs, a 1/4 inch to 6.35mm adapter, airplane adaptors, two cables of different lengths (114 cm and 162 cm), clips, a volume controller, and a storage pouch for the headphones. One particularly interesting inclusion is the set of three differently styled tuning nozzles along with a nozzle removal tool, allowing users to tailor the sound signature based on personal preference.
Focus on Sound Quality:
Although I’m not an audiophile, having listened to headphones costing over ten thousand yuan, the SE846 remains a high-end choice.
Wearing Comfort:
I’ve always preferred ear-type in-ear monitors and have previously used memory foam tips. Listening to music for two hours at home with the SE846 was comfortable, with no noticeable discomfort. The stock cable remains soft and doesn’t produce any stethoscope effect outdoors.
Initial Impressions:
I started with popular vocal tracks, instrumental pieces, and classical music, and found the SE846’s initial performance impressive. Vocals are particularly noteworthy. The clarity and closeness to the ear are remarkable. Male voices are rich, while female voices are smooth and mellow. Listening closely, you can almost hear the singer's breathing and lip movements. After testing a variety of vocal styles, the SE846 consistently delivered the intended emotional depth.
Analysis:
On this price point, the SE846 performs admirably. Comparatively, it might fall short against the K3003 and IE800, but that’s a minor issue. The soundstage is decent, though slightly wider horizontally than vertically.
Frequency Response:
Compared to my previous SE530, the SE846 shows significant improvement. The bass is punchy yet controlled, avoiding any muddiness. The midrange is clear and detailed, while the highs extend smoothly without harshness.
Driveability:
Driving the SE846 from a Samsung S8 or iPhone 7 results in a slightly constrained soundstage, with the sound feeling somewhat boxed in. However, the MacBook Pro provides a larger soundstage, though the sound can become a bit rough and edgy. For optimal performance, an external DAC/AMP such as the Hifiman 603 is recommended.
Customization:
The SE846 offers excellent customization options. By switching between the three included nozzle types—balanced, bright, and warm—you can adjust the tonal balance to suit your preference. Additionally, experimenting with different cables can further enhance the experience, though it requires some effort.
In Summary:
While some online reviews criticize the SE846 for lacking the deep bass impact of dynamic drivers and argue that the high-frequency detail isn't as refined as expected, these critiques don’t resonate with me since I prioritize mainstream music enjoyment. Overall, I’m thoroughly satisfied with the SE846. My wife shares my enthusiasm, making it a headphone that brings joy to the entire family. A headphone that enhances family harmony is indeed a great investment.
