The expandable S12 series provides developers with a variety of options. The on-chip flash memory capacity can be expanded from 32KB to 1MB, and can be easily transferred to higher performance S12X devices.

The S12X series of 16-bit microcontrollers further enhances the functions of the HCS12 series and is ideal for body control and gateway applications. The S12X series retains the 16-bit efficiency of HCS12 and establishes an efficient migration path, which helps save users' investment. The S12XS series is a 16-bit MCU specifically developed for a variety of cost-sensitive automotive body electronics applications, which can meet customer needs for design flexibility and platform compatibility. This series of devices includes 6 models, flash memory from 64KB to 256KB, package from 48 pins to 112 pins. Customers can flexibly choose different capacities of storage, packaging and price points to meet the needs of their specific applications.

As an expansion product of the S12X series, the S12XS series further expands the economy and compatibility of the high-performance S12XE series products launched recently, broadens the entire S12X product series, and can provide customers with lower cost and smaller package products . The S12XS and S12XE series are equipped with supplemental memory, peripherals and multiple packages. If application requirements change during the development period, the flexibility of the S12XS series can help designers quickly respond to market changes and reduce migration costs. In fact, all S12 and S12X series products are scalable on the entire automotive electronics platform, and their hardware and software can be reused and compatible with each other.

In the application development process, customers can use the S12XE series as a development platform for the S12XS series. Designers can use the S12XE series as simulation tools to maintain compatibility when developing applications for the S12XS series. This helps reduce the constraints, and the code written for the MC9S12XE series devices can run on the MC9S12XS series devices without modification.

2 Wide selection of cost-effective

The performance of the S12X series is five times that of the HCS12 microcontroller. The enhanced core and enhanced peripherals are used to increase the bus speed (up to 40MHz, while the HCS12 can only reach 25MHz), but also has a complete CAN function And improved the interrupt handling capacity. S12X adds a parallel processing XGATE module. This module is an intelligent, programmable direct memory access (DMA) module that can perform interrupt processing, communication, and data preprocessing, and free up part of the CPU space for other tasks, thereby improving performance.

The S12XS series is a cost-effective addition to the high-performance S12XE MCU series. Compared with the S12XE series, the S12XS has been streamlined in the following aspects. In terms of peripherals, peripheral devices have been reduced. In terms of memory mapping, S12XS series devices have no emulated EEPROM (EEE), and RAM and data flash are smaller than similar S12XE series devices; the mapping of these modules is upward compatible. In terms of flash memory, the flash memory of the S12XS series is 64KB ~ 256KB; and the flash memory of the S12XE series is 128KB ~ 1MB.

The main functions of the S12XS series include:

(1) 32MHz core and bus speed;

(2) 64KB, 128KB and 256KB flash memory options, all with error correction code (ECC);

(3) 4KB ~ 8KB data flash memory with ECC can be used for data and program storage;

(4) Select the configurable 8, 10 or 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a conversion time of 3 milliseconds;

(5) Support control area network (CAN), local area network (LIN) and serial peripheral interface (SPI) protocols;

(6) 8-channel timer with 16-bit counter;

(7) Excellent EMC / run and stop current performance;
