Medical Electronics: Pressure sensor revenue is expected to increase

According to IHS iSuppli's MEMS market briefing, the operating income of MEMS pressure sensors in the medical electronics field is expected to increase by 7% this year, benefiting from applications in disposable devices and medical monitoring.

This year's operating income of pressure sensors in medical electronics applications will reach US $ 137.6 million, higher than the US $ 129.2 million in 2011. It will maintain steady growth in the next few years, and is expected to reach US $ 186.7 million by 2016, as shown in the figure.

Although the operating income of MEMS pressure sensors in the medical electronics field is relatively small compared to the automotive or consumer fields, medical electronics belongs to the so-called high-value category, and the average sales price is much higher than other MEMS fields. In addition to medical electronics, high-value MEMS pressure sensor applications also include industrial and military / aerospace, accounting for the other half of the overall high-value MEMS field. This year's high-value MEMS operating revenue is expected to reach 283.6 million US dollars.

This year's pressure sensor will become the main type of MEMS device, with an estimated operating income of US $ 1.5 billion. For medical applications, MEMS pressure sensor technology requires expertise in producing precision low-pressure measurement devices for use in invasive or non-invasive applications. Pressure sensors for invasive applications, such as blood pressure monitoring, are low-cost consumables. In contrast, non-invasive pressure sensors used for purposes such as monitoring sleep disturbances can be reused at a much higher cost.

Disposable devices are never a one-time source of operating income

The most common medical pressure sensor is a disposable cardiac catheter, which is used to monitor blood pressure during millions of surgical procedures per year. Catheter-based instruments must be particularly small in size to measure blood pressure and microvascular resistance near the heart. Measuring lower pressures while requiring a small size poses challenges for manufacturers. Vendors with relevant technologies that meet this market include: Honeywell in New Jersey, USA; General Electric in New York, USA; and Silicon Microstructures, a subsidiary of Elmos Semiconductor in Germany. There are other manufacturers in this market.

Another disposable application of MEMS pressure sensors is infusion pumps, which are used to deliver fluids, drugs, or nutrition to the patient's circulatory system. The infusion pump must have a simple structure and low cost, and can be thrown away after use. The number of such pressure sensors used in 2011 was much higher than 60 million.

Breath monitoring

Breath monitoring is another major application of medical pressure sensors, ranking behind disposable instruments. Although the pressure sensor shipments in this area are much lower than those in disposable applications, the annual sales of equipment related to respiratory therapy are also in the millions, and the price of sensors in this area is significantly higher than disposable devices. A continuous pressure ventilation system (CPAP) is a type of breath monitoring device that is mainly used to treat sleep apnea at home. The United States is currently the main market for respiratory monitoring equipment, as this treatment can be reimbursed. Major suppliers include Philips Respironics, a subsidiary of Philips in the Netherlands, and ResMed, California, USA.

Oxygen therapy also belongs to respiratory monitoring and is used to control or increase the oxygen content of the blood. An aging population and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are becoming more common, driving the growth of this market. Honeywell and General Electric are major suppliers of oxygen therapy machine sensors. Oxygen therapy machines usually contain a low-pressure silicon sensor and a high-pressure silicon sensor, which are encapsulated in a steel case and filled with oil.

Respirator is another independent market for pressure sensors, used for the treatment of diseases such as lung injury, asthma and adult and acute respiratory distress syndrome. But device sales in this area are much lower than other respiratory-related applications.

Other fields are also important

Pressure sensors are also used to measure vital signs. In this field, devices using sensors include desktop or central monitors, and multi-parameter monitoring devices. Low-end devices include at least one non-invasive pressure sensor; mid-range devices include one or two devices; high-end devices include both non-invasive pressure sensors, invasive pressure sensors, and additional breathing pressure sensing. There are viable markets in Europe and North America, but the fastest growth in the Asia-Pacific region.

In the field of implantable devices, pressure sensors are used in heart monitors, glaucoma monitors and intracranial pressure monitors. Although the market for these monitors is currently in development, its future potential is huge. For example, heart sensors can be used to monitor patients at home without having to go to the hospital frequently, which can save a lot of money for the country.

The major suppliers of MEMS pressure sensors for medical electronics applications include Honeywell, GE Sensing, Omron, Freescale Semiconductor, MEAS (Measurement SpecialTIes), TDK Epcos, Memscap, Merit Sensor Systems , Japan's Panasonic, Japan's Hokuriku, and about 10 other smaller companies. The supply chain also includes wafer suppliers such as British Semefab, which supplies bare chips to 1LP or 2LP packagers.
