Energy-efficient LED lighting

- Future Lighting Solutions -

Studies have shown that one fifth of all electricity generated worldwide goes to lighting homes, shops, offices, signs, public spaces and streetlights. In an effort to reduce this consumption, consumers, companies and governments around the globe are looking for energy-efficient alternatives To traditional light sources.

Solid-state lighting (SSL) solutions are now penetrating all areas of lighting: in homes, offices, shops and on the roads. NXP offers a range of mains LED drivers that not only deliver high efficiency, but also have the capability to be dimmed In combination with the majority of existing dimming systems.

Residential Lighting Solutions
CFL lamps have been the major technology associated with energy-efficient residential lighting over the past decade, but LED solutions are quickly moving in and promise to provide even more innovative solutions for the future.

For residential lighting, the SSL152x family is a perfect fit. This SMPS (switched mode power supply) IC operates directly from the rectified universal mains. It is ideal for retrofitting LEDs to traditional lamps, and for LED driver solutions used in cabinet, kitchen and Many other applications in the home. With just a minimum of additional components, it offers a driver solution that is fully compatible with transistor and thyristor (TRIAC)-based wall-mounted dimmers, for remarkable versatility.

Utilizing Existing Architecture
Many of today's LED drivers are dimmable, either onboard or with communication protocols such as DALI or DMX. While this adds superb functionality on architectural or extremely high end installations, the practicality becomes somewhat limited in the commercial market.

To address this, NXP has introduced a dimmable LED driver that utilizes traditional incandescent control techniques such as TRIAC or transistor dimmers. This allows simple installation for controllable LED luminaires in place of conventional bulbs. Taking the dimmed mains input, the driver provides a constant current Output coupled with a corresponding PWM dimming signal for the LED.

Dimmable Mains Driver Solutions
Based on the SSL1523, the NXP evaluation board is capable of up to 15V (open circuit) output voltage and 1A drive current (max. LED power of 3.5W). Powered directly from the output of a TRIAC dimmer, the board shows the dimming Capability of an LED system from a standard residential lighting infrastructure.

Street Lighting and Wide Area Solutions
As LEDs are now being adopted in general lighting and white-light applications, NXP also provides an ideal driver solution with the SSL1750 for such applications. It benefits from universal mains supply operation ranging from 90V to 276V AC, which represents a global driver solution that Can still be optimized, for maximum efficiency, to the specific mains input voltage.

With power wastage in street lighting becoming more of an environmental and cost concern, the SSL1750 also includes an integrated PFC (Power Factor Correction) controller to reduce power consumption and reduce the harmonic current on the power line. At low power levels, the PFC can Switch to burst-mode control to maintain high efficiency. This means the driver will utilize its soft-start and soft-stop functions to eliminate audible noise.

With an integrated PFC, the SSL1750 allows alternative retrofitting of existing street lighting, since the external component count is lower and, as a result, creates a smaller driver solution that can be installed easily in the luminaire. It is also easy to integrate new, LED-based luminaires for use with existing street lighting networks.

LED-based lighting solutions, with advanced dimming capabilities, also allow large areas to be easily dimmed during quieter periods, providing further energy savings and reducing light pollution. Using sensors also allows street lights to increase light output to required levels as vehicles approach. Help save more power while maintaining road safety.

For dimmable mains LED driver solutions, the NXP SSL152x and SSL175x families of SMPS ICs are ideal for driving the latest high power LEDs with high efficiency, dimming functionality, and low total system cost.
