MTSH-1 Infrared Thermometer
(Compacting Method)
Purpose and Scope of Application
The method is suitable for preparing asphalt mixture test specimens using the standard or large compaction method, intended for laboratory testing of the physical and mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures.
1. The standard compaction method is used to produce cylindrical specimens with a diameter of φ101.6mm × 63.5mm for Marshall tests and indirect tensile tests (cracking method). The large compaction method is designed for larger cylindrical specimens of φ152.4mm × 95.3mm.
2. When preparing asphalt mixture test pieces, the size of the mineral materials and the number of test pieces must meet specific requirements:
2.1 For lab-made asphalt mixtures, the test piece diameter should be at least four times the nominal maximum aggregate size, and the thickness should be 1 to 1.5 times the maximum particle size. For specimens with a diameter of 101.6 mm, the maximum aggregate size should not exceed 26.5 mm. Coarse aggregates larger than 26.5 mm should be replaced by equivalent amounts of 13.2–26.5 mm aggregates when necessary. Large cylindrical test pieces (φ152.4 mm) are suitable for aggregates up to 37.5 mm in size. At least four test pieces should be prepared in the lab, with five to six if needed.
2.2 When using samples from mixing plants or construction sites to make 101.6 mm diameter test pieces, different methods apply depending on the aggregate size:
- If the nominal maximum aggregate size is ≤26.5 mm, direct sampling can be used, typically producing four test pieces.
- If the size is >26.5 mm but ≤31.5 mm, screening is recommended, still resulting in four test pieces. Direct sampling may require six pieces.
- If the size exceeds 31.5 mm, screening through a 26.5 mm sieve is mandatory, with four test pieces per set.
Instruments and Materials
Standard Compactor: Consists of a compacting hammer, a flat circular head (φ98.5 mm), and a guide bar. The hammer is manually or mechanically lifted and dropped from a height of 457.2 mm ± 1.5 mm. The standard hammer weighs 4536 g ± 9 g.
Large Compactor: Features a larger flat head (φ149.5 mm), a guide bar, and a motorized lifting system. It drops from 457.2 mm ± 2.5 mm, with a hammer weight of 10210 g ± 10 g.
Standard Compaction Table: A wooden base (200×200×457 mm) with a 305×305×25 mm steel plate. Made from hardwood with a density of 0.67–0.77 g/cm³. Suitable for both manual and mechanical compaction.
Automatic Compaction Device: Combines the standard hammer and table, driven electrically. Operates at 60 cycles/min ± 5, with a power rating of ≥250W for large-scale compaction.
Laboratory Asphalt Mixer: Ensures proper mixing temperature and time. Capacity ≥10L, with blade speeds between 70–80 rpm and revolution speeds of 40–50 rpm.
Mold Release Tool: Electric or manual, allows easy removal of cylindrical test pieces. Includes standard and large-sized molds.
Test Molds: Standard molds have an inner diameter of 101.6 mm ± 0.2 mm, height 87 mm, and a base of 120.6 mm. Large molds have an inner diameter of 152.4 mm, height 115 mm, and a base of 172 mm.
Ovens: One large and one medium, equipped with temperature regulators.
