MTSH-1 Infrared Thermometer
(Compacting Method)
Purpose and Scope of Application
The method is suitable for creating asphalt mixture test specimens using either the standard compaction or large compaction method. It is primarily used in laboratory settings to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures.
The standard compaction method is ideal for producing cylindrical specimens with a diameter of φ101.6mm × 63.5mm, commonly used for Marshall and indirect tensile tests (cracking method). The large compaction method is designed for larger cylindrical specimens with a diameter of φ152.4mm × 95.3mm.
The size and quantity of the mineral materials used in preparing the asphalt mixture test pieces must comply with specific guidelines:
3.1 When preparing asphalt mixture test pieces in the lab, the test piece diameter should be at least four times the nominal maximum aggregate size, and the thickness should be between one to 1.5 times the nominal maximum size. For 101.6mm diameter specimens, the maximum aggregate size should not exceed 26.5mm. If the aggregate size is larger than 26.5mm, it should be replaced with equivalent material of 13.2–26.5mm. Large cylindrical test pieces (152.4mm) are suitable when the nominal maximum aggregate size is up to 37.5mm. The number of test pieces should be less than four, but may be increased to 5–6 if needed.
3.2 When using pre-made samples from mixing plants or construction sites to create 101.6mm diameter test pieces, different methods and quantities apply depending on the aggregate size:
If the nominal maximum aggregate size is ≤26.5mm, use the direct sampling method, typically resulting in four test pieces.
If the nominal maximum aggregate size is between 26.5mm and 31.5mm, it's better to use a screening method to remove larger particles. Still four test pieces are recommended. If using the direct method, increase the number to six.
If the nominal maximum aggregate size exceeds 31.5mm, the screening method must be used with a 26.5mm sieve. Four test pieces are still standard.
Instruments and Materials
Standard Compactor: Composed of a compacting hammer, a flat circular head (φ98.5mm), and a guide bar with a handle. The hammer is manually or mechanically lifted and dropped from a height of 457.2 mm ± 1.5 mm. The standard hammer weighs 4536g ± 9g.
Large Compactor: Includes a compacting hammer, a flat circular compactor (φ149.5mm), and a guide bar with a handle. The hammer is machine-lifted and dropped from a height of 457.2 mm ± 2.5 mm. The large hammer weighs 10210g ± 10g.
Standard Compaction Table: A wooden pier (200mm × 200mm × 457mm) with a steel plate (305mm × 305mm × 25mm). Made of hardwood with a dry density of 0.67–0.77g/cm³. Must support both manual and mechanical compaction.
Automatic Compaction Device: Integrates the standard hammer and table, electrically driven to compact continuously. Speed: 60 ± 5 cycles/min. Large-scale compaction requires at least 250W power.
