The DCS (Distributed Control System) is a fundamental automation system, while the MIS (Management Information System) focuses on office and business automation. There's a significant difference in data response speed between the two: DCS operates in seconds, while MIS may take hours or even longer. Therefore, it's essential to have an isolation device between them, which is typically a dynamic data server. This server plays a crucial role in monitoring the production process, storing and managing historical data, performing statistical quality control, enabling predictive maintenance, and diagnosing equipment faults. The DCS acquires real-time production data from the field and transmits it through a communication network to both the operation station and the dynamic data server. Since the dynamic data server collects analog or logic signals across the entire production process, its data acquisition speed is extremely high. After processing this data, it is sent to the production management department for further analysis.
In many companies, multiple DCS and PLC systems from different manufacturers are used. To integrate these signals into a dynamic data server, it's best to choose a universal display platform that can support various DCS and PLC systems. Software like FIX, INTouch, KingView, and Synall can be used to develop drivers for different systems, allowing all signals to be displayed on a single interface. Recently, many factories have adopted universal operation stations running on the NT operating system, with monitoring software such as FIX and INTouch. Each DCS model requires specific driver software, and communication between different DCS systems is usually handled via an OPC server. Some signals can also be sent directly to the MIS system server. These general-purpose monitoring tools can store historical data, with dozens of signals stored for up to 280 days. For longer storage periods, the OSI history database is a better option, capable of storing data for over three years. Most of these monitoring systems come with an OSI interface.
Older DCS systems often had dedicated operating systems and monitoring software, making integration with other systems difficult. If interconnection is needed, a dynamic data server can be established using a computer interface unit. While the monitoring software can remain general-purpose and run on the NT platform, the data flow is typically one-way, from the DCS to the server. When designing an MIS system, it's advisable to use a dynamic data server rather than sending DCS and PLC data directly to the web, as this could interfere with the normal operation of the DCS and PLC systems. The number of dynamic data servers required depends on the volume of data and the level of data security needed—usually, up to 10,000 data points can be supported effectively.
