Discussion on the future of IoT sensors and other related issues
Since the invention of the sensor in the 1860s, more than 150 years have passed. Today, with the rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) industry, there is a growing demand for advanced and more sophisticated sensor technologies. Sensors are now considered a key enabler of IoT systems, acting as the essential link between the physical and digital worlds.
In 2017, the global sensor market was valued at around $4 billion, and by 2021, it had grown to an impressive $65 billion. Among these, MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensors have emerged as a significant growth area. At the recent Munich (Shanghai) Electronics Show, Bosch Sensortec showcased three innovative products: the BMA400, BMI085, and an interactive projection module, highlighting their commitment to advancing sensor technology.
During the event, I had the opportunity to interview Mr. Ralf Schellin, Head of Bosch Sensortec’s MEMS Products division. He shared his insights on the future of IoT sensors and the evolving landscape of smart device development.
Mr. Ralf Schellin emphasized that the future of IoT sensors lies in intelligence, driven by the need for more complex and scenario-based applications. He outlined the evolution of three major sensor categories, each addressing different levels of complexity and performance requirements.
The first category includes sensors with specific functions—simple devices that provide basic data for applications like screen orientation or motion-based gaming. These sensors typically use a straightforward interrupt mechanism, making them ideal for native data processing.
The second type consists of pre-programmed sensors, which are designed to handle more complex scenarios such as step counting in wearables or gesture recognition. These sensors require embedded features to optimize performance in real-world environments.
The third and most advanced category is the "AI" sensor, which integrates artificial intelligence capabilities to process and interpret data in real time, offering smarter and more adaptive solutions.
Bosch Sensortec has been at the forefront of this evolution, continuously innovating and adapting to new market demands. Their product lineup reflects this vision, with cutting-edge solutions tailored for IoT, wearable tech, AR/VR, smart homes, and industrial applications.
One of their standout products is the BMA400, an ultra-low power and high-performance inertial sensor ideal for wearables and IoT devices. Another is the BMI085, a high-precision 6-axis IMU designed for VR and AR applications, ensuring smooth and immersive user experiences.
Additionally, Bosch introduced an interactive projection module that leverages MOEMS laser scanning technology. This compact solution allows any surface to become an intuitive UI, opening up new possibilities for smart home devices, AR glasses, and wearables.
As the IoT ecosystem continues to expand, the integration of sensors with MCUs, algorithms, and wireless modules is becoming increasingly important. Bosch is actively pursuing this convergence, offering integrated solutions that enhance performance, reduce power consumption, and simplify development for engineers.
