Rheinmetall, a leading Tier 1 automotive supplier and part of the TÃœV Rheinland Automotive Division, is expanding its presence in the electric vehicle (EV) market. At the recent Frankfurt International Auto Show (IAA), the company unveiled a new 90 kW electric drive module and a modular battery system, both showcased in a compact demonstration vehicle. These innovations are designed to offer flexibility for various vehicle sizes, from small models to larger ones.
The 90 kW high-voltage motor features a synchronous permanent magnet design with concentrated coils, making it ideal for applications where space is limited. It is currently being used in a compact model but can be scaled up for broader use. The motor is paired with a 29 kWh battery pack, enabling a top speed of 135 km/h and a range of 275 km. Notably, the design does not compromise on passenger or cargo space, maintaining the vehicle's practicality.
The new battery pack is built using aluminum and is designed to be modular, allowing integration with customer-specific battery modules. Its compact and high-energy-density structure makes it suitable for a wide range of EVs. Additionally, the battery includes an advanced cooling system developed by Rheinmetall’s military division, ensuring safety and performance through a composite fiber structure that prevents external intrusion.
This system is positioned as an optional production choice for future EVs, offering manufacturers the flexibility to tailor their designs according to specific needs. With decades of experience in electrical drive systems, Rheinmetall has been at the forefront of innovation since 2004, when it introduced the first all-electric coolant pump for BMW engines through its subsidiary Pilberg. This latest development highlights the company’s continued commitment to advancing electric mobility solutions.
