Yesterday afternoon, a Toshiba 37A3000C LCD TV was brought in for disposal. I know this person well because many of the used appliances in my store are bought from him at low prices and then resold. We have a good cooperative relationship. This time, the TV looked relatively new. He said he got it from a user’s home for 200 yuan. The issue was a white screen, with only a faint background visible. He really liked the TV and wanted to fix it himself. Normally, such a repair would cost more than 300 yuan, but since we’re partners, I offered to do it for 200 yuan if no major parts were replaced. He was happy to agree.
After he left, I tested the TV again and noticed that both the background image and the system menu had a gray tint. My initial thought was that the problem might be on the logic board or the screen itself. I opened the back cover and located the logic board, which was enclosed under the upper metal plate.
Removing the logic board, I examined it closely and found that the surface of the AS15 chip appeared slightly dark and uneven, which made me suspect it had been damaged by prolonged high temperatures. That raised some red flags. I decided to replace it.
Before removing the AS15 chip, I made sure to secure the nearby small components like RC chips, as they could easily be blown away by the air gun. I used masking tape around the chip to protect it. I increased the hot air temperature as much as possible but kept the airflow moderate so the heat would focus better, reducing the heating time and protecting the board.
Once the chip was removed, I used a soldering iron to trim the pads for easier re-soldering. Then I carefully aligned the new chip, fixed two corners first, and then applied solder around it using the drag welding method. I added rosin or solder paste continuously to ensure proper flow. If any residual solder remained in the corners, I used a soldering iron and tin wire to clean them up thoroughly until all were clear.
After soldering, I checked the chip under a magnifying glass to make sure there were no short circuits. It looked good. I reinstalled the board and powered on the TV. To my relief, the blue screen came on perfectly, and the white screen issue was completely fixed. A signal test confirmed everything was working normally.
This was a straightforward repair, but it reminded me how important it is to take your time and be careful when dealing with sensitive components. Even a small mistake can lead to bigger problems down the line. I’m glad it worked out, and the customer is happy with the result.
