LED as a backlight is first applied to small and medium-sized LCD backlights such as mobile phones, GPS navigators, portable DVD players, digital photo frames, etc. As the price declines, the market acceptance level gradually increases, and international mainstream display manufacturers are focusing on LED backlighting. The source is further pushed up to the larger LCD TV field, and it also expands the business opportunities for the LED industry.
Zhang Bing, director of research at Display Research, a market research organization, predicted at the "2010 Shanghai International New Light Source & New Energy Lighting Forum" that the global LED-backlit LCD TV sales in 2009 were about 4.24 million units, accounting for only 3% of the entire LCD TV market. By 2014, sales will soar to around 156 million units, and the market share of LCD TVs will also soar to 64%. In addition, LED backlights have been used in the notebook market for many years, and the market penetration rate has been quite high. In 2009, it has reached 61%, and in 2010 it will reach 84%. In 2012, notebook computers will stop using CCFL as a backlight. The penetration rate of LEDs in liquid crystal displays will also increase to 16.8% in 2010. For the domestic TV market, Li Xiaofang, president of Skyworth Group Display Technology Division, predicts that the sales volume of domestic LED backlight LCD TVs is expected to reach 10 million units this year, accounting for 25% of the total sales of domestic color TVs.
The rapid increase in the market share of LED-backlit TVs has created opportunities for TV companies to upgrade their products, and on the other hand has brought huge market space for the LED industry. Because as the screen size increases, the amount of LED used as a backlight will increase geometrically. For example, in a notebook computer, the number of LEDs used is about 40 to 60, and in a side-lit LED-backlit TV, the amount of LEDs is 300 to 400 (in 40 inches), and the TV with a direct-lit backlight structure is used. The number of LEDs will be even more, reaching thousands.
